Howe Sound
Howe Sound, or Átl’ḵa7tsem, is a place shaped by both beauty and history. For thousands of years, it has been part of Squamish Nation territory and an important site of movement, sustenance, and stewardship. Later colonial renaming and industrial development, particularly mining, logging, and other shoreline industries, left lasting damage on the region’s waters, habitats, and biodiversity. Pollution and extraction disrupted the ecological balance of the sound, affecting the health of marine species and coastal environments. At the same time, Howe Sound has become a meaningful example of environmental recovery, with restoration work and regional stewardship helping rebuild habitats and support a healthier future. Today, its dramatic scenery is inseparable from its environmental story: a place of ongoing recovery that asks not just to be enjoyed, but protected.
