Port Mellon
Port Mellon is a place where the environmental and industrial history of Howe Sound becomes especially visible. Located within the broader territory of the Squamish Nation, the area sits in a waterway that has supported Indigenous life, movement, and stewardship for thousands of years. In the twentieth century, Port Mellon became defined by industry, especially the pulp and paper mill that has operated there for generations, shaping both the local economy and the surrounding shoreline. That industrial presence also became part of Howe Sound’s larger story of contamination and ecological stress, as marine habitats across the region were affected by pollution, degraded water quality, and habitat loss. In recent decades, Howe Sound has also become known for ecological recovery, with restoration efforts, community action, and Indigenous leadership helping support the return of healthier waters and marine life. Port Mellon therefore reflects both sides of the region’s history: a site of industry and extraction, and part of a coastal environment that continues to demand care, accountability, and long-term protection.
